What’s in Your E-Juice? Understanding Labels, Ingredients, and Safety

Ingredient lists, nicotine concentrations, warning statements, and other labeling information can help you understand a product, but a label alone does not establish that an e-liquid is safe to inhale.

Ever wondered what is actually inside a bottle of e-liquid? Flavor names and packaging may get most of the attention, but the more useful information is usually found in the nicotine concentration, ingredient information, manufacturer details, warnings, and product specifications.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), e-liquids commonly contain nicotine, flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and other ingredients. When used in an e-cigarette, the liquid is heated to create an aerosol that is inhaled.

Understanding what those terms mean—and what a label can and cannot tell you—can help adult users make more informed product choices.

How to Read an E-Juice Label

E-liquid labels vary by manufacturer, product type, and jurisdiction. Instead of looking for one universal label format, focus on the information that helps identify what the product contains and how it is intended to be used.

Common Terms and Abbreviations

  • PG — Propylene Glycol: A liquid commonly used as part of the e-liquid base. It is less viscous than vegetable glycerin and can influence flavor delivery, throat sensation, and wicking behavior.
  • VG — Vegetable Glycerin: A more viscous base ingredient commonly associated with denser aerosol production and a different mouthfeel than higher-PG formulations.
  • Nicotine Salt: A formulation in which nicotine is combined with an acid. Its sensory characteristics and concentration vary by product.
  • Freebase Nicotine: Another form of nicotine used in e-liquids. It should not automatically be described as “more potent” than nicotine salt because actual nicotine exposure depends on concentration, device output, puffing behavior, and formulation.
  • mg/mL: Milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of e-liquid. For example, 6 mg/mL means the liquid contains 6 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter.

What Information Should You Look For?

Labeling requirements differ between countries and product categories, so not every e-liquid bottle will be legally required to display the same information. In the United States, FDA regulates the manufacture, packaging, labeling, advertising, sale, and distribution of electronic nicotine delivery systems, including e-liquids.

Useful information to look for may include:

  • Product and manufacturer identification.
  • Nicotine concentration, if the product contains nicotine.
  • PG/VG ratio when provided.
  • Ingredient information.
  • Lot, batch, or traceability information when supplied.
  • Storage and handling instructions.
  • Applicable warning statements required in the market where the product is sold.

For nicotine-containing covered tobacco products in the United States, FDA requires the nicotine addiction warning: “WARNING: This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.” The agency also specifies how that warning must appear on covered product packaging.

An expiration date, complete consumer-facing ingredient list, or third-party laboratory certificate should not be treated as a universal federal labeling requirement for every e-liquid. Their presence can provide additional information, but their absence needs to be evaluated in the context of the product and applicable regulations rather than used as an automatic safety verdict.

What Is Usually in E-Liquid?

FDA describes e-liquid as commonly containing nicotine, flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and other ingredients. Formulations vary considerably, so not every bottle contains exactly the same components or ratios.

1. Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin

PG and VG act as major carrier liquids in many e-liquid formulations. Their relative proportions influence viscosity and can affect how efficiently a particular coil or pod wicks the liquid.

Ratios such as 50/50 or 70VG/30PG are common examples, but they are not automatically suitable for every device. Small pod coils and larger sub-ohm coils can have very different wicking requirements.

2. Nicotine

Not every e-liquid contains nicotine, but many do. Nicotine concentration is commonly expressed in mg/mL or sometimes as a percentage.

For example, 20 mg/mL corresponds to a 2% nicotine concentration by volume convention used on many consumer labels. However, the amount of nicotine actually delivered to the user is influenced by more than the number on the bottle. Device power, coil design, puff duration, frequency of use, and nicotine formulation can all affect exposure.

Nicotine is highly addictive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and that nicotine has known health effects, particularly for youth and during pregnancy.

3. Flavoring Ingredients

Flavor formulations can contain multiple individual chemicals. A flavoring ingredient being used in food does not automatically establish that it is harmless when repeatedly inhaled because ingestion and inhalation are different routes of exposure.

CDC notes that e-cigarette aerosol can contain potentially harmful substances, including certain flavoring chemicals. One example is diacetyl, which has been associated with serious lung disease in occupational exposure settings.

Rather than assuming that a “natural,” “artificial,” or “diacetyl-free” marketing claim makes an e-liquid safe, consider the complete product information and remember that researchers are still studying the health effects of inhaling e-cigarette aerosols over time.

The Label Does Not Tell You Everything About the Aerosol

One important distinction is that the contents of the bottle and the contents of the aerosol are not necessarily identical. Heating an e-liquid can change its chemical composition, and the device itself can contribute additional substances to the aerosol.

CDC states that e-cigarette aerosol can contain nicotine, volatile organic compounds, cancer-causing chemicals, tiny particles, and metals such as nickel, tin, and lead. The amount and type of substances present can vary between products and operating conditions.

This is why an ingredient list should be viewed as useful product information—not as proof that inhaling the resulting aerosol is risk-free.

Why Device Settings Matter Too

E-liquid safety and performance cannot be separated completely from the hardware. Coil condition, wattage, airflow, and liquid supply all influence how the liquid is heated.

Operating a coil outside its recommended range or allowing the wick to become too dry can change performance and contribute to overheating or burnt material. Follow the coil manufacturer’s wattage specifications rather than assuming that higher power automatically provides better flavor.

Handling Nicotine E-Liquid Safely

Nicotine-containing e-liquid needs careful handling. FDA notes that accidental exposure to liquid nicotine can be toxic, particularly for young children.

  • Keep products secured: Store e-liquid where children and pets cannot access it.
  • Keep containers closed: Replace the cap securely after use.
  • Avoid unnecessary skin contact: Follow the product’s handling instructions and wash exposed skin promptly if nicotine liquid is spilled on it.
  • Keep the original label: Avoid transferring e-liquid into an unlabeled bottle or food/drink container.
  • Follow manufacturer storage instructions: Heat, sunlight, and storage conditions can affect product quality.

How to Evaluate an E-Liquid Product

No single label feature can guarantee product safety, but clear identification and traceable information can make a product easier to evaluate.

Before using an e-liquid, consider checking:

  • Whether the manufacturer and product are clearly identified.
  • Whether the nicotine concentration is clearly stated when applicable.
  • Whether the bottle and seal appear intact.
  • Whether required warnings are present for the market in which it is sold.
  • Whether storage and handling information is available.
  • Whether the product is compatible with the device and coil you intend to use.

Be cautious with products that have unclear origins, missing manufacturer identification, damaged packaging, unexplained relabeling, or information that conflicts between the bottle and outer packaging.

What About Lab Reports and “Safety Certifications”?

Third-party laboratory testing can provide useful information when the report clearly identifies the product, batch, laboratory, testing method, and substances evaluated. However, a generic “lab tested” badge or certificate should not automatically be interpreted as proof that an e-liquid is harmless.

Testing is only as informative as its scope. A report that tests for one contaminant, for example, does not establish the absence of every other potentially harmful substance.

Common Label Red Flags

  • The nicotine concentration is missing or difficult to interpret on a nicotine-containing product.
  • Manufacturer or brand identification is unclear.
  • Packaging appears opened, damaged, leaking, or altered.
  • The bottle and outer packaging provide conflicting product information.
  • The product makes broad health or safety claims without meaningful supporting information.
  • A laboratory claim is presented without enough information to identify what was actually tested.

Making More Informed E-Liquid Choices

Reading an e-liquid label can tell you important things about nicotine concentration, PG/VG composition, flavor formulation, manufacturer identity, and product handling. It can also help you compare whether an e-liquid is appropriate for the device you use.

But labels have limits. They describe the packaged liquid; they do not necessarily describe every chemical that may be present in the aerosol after the liquid is heated. They also cannot establish that vaping is harmless.

Final Thoughts

A better e-liquid decision starts with understanding what the label actually tells you. Check the nicotine concentration, base composition, manufacturer information, warnings, packaging condition, and compatibility with your device rather than relying only on flavor descriptions or marketing claims.

If information is unclear or contradictory, verify it with the manufacturer or choose a product with clearer documentation rather than guessing.
